Art and Wine Pairing - Ken Newman at Celebration of Fine Art

I saved the best for last...or at least that's my opinion... Ken actually included his thoughts on the pairing of his wine.. So enjoy.. Debbie

The Wine – Ravenswood Sonoma County Zinfandel -Old Vine

(a heavy bodied wine)

Being fairly wine illiterate I have become fascinated with the parallels Aldo Pitton, our wine consultant for the Art and Wine Pairing, has exposed between this wine and my art. As an artist to simply describe your work in three words was an enlightening experience.

Communication – Communication – Communication… I hope this opportunity to use wine as a vehicle to better share the dialogue of my art is as intriguing to you as it has been to me.

First off this is a very American grape with origins in California and more specific to Sonoma County - very similar to my beginnings on the North Coast in Ft Bragg. The Zinfandel is produced from a very gnarled old vine with great history-similar to twisted burl woods – the great history told in a piece of wood. This wine is created simply; naturally, with a lengthy process - 24 months. I choose wood for its natural process - cracks-decay-formations in a very raw form. Slowing the process down with simple hand tools allows my mind to create a story.

The 24 months in oak barrels, develops enhanced layers of flavors and aromas - aerating the wine – moving the wine over your tongue allows one to identify these intricate layers. In the same manner, when allowing one’s eye to move all around the sculpture opens the mind’s eye to see subtle textures, layers of materials and the story.

There is a struggle between the tannins and fruit to find harmony. The struggle to portray movement in solid objects – communicating emotion not just beauty - is what allows this to happen.

Enjoy the Structure, Tension and Complexity of my sculptures and Ravenswood Sonoma County Zinfandel!

Donna Armstrong - jewelry -gemstones

Donna Armstrong is from Idaho, we met her years ago at an art show in our small town of Cambridge. Of course, her work is SPARKLING!!
She lives north of us in Idaho and has a studio in McCall. She was the new to the Celebration of Fine Art this year, a wonderful addition, both her work and her attitude!
Originally from Twin Falls, she has an interesting history and a love of gemstones... Her website isn't up and running yet, but let me know if you are interested, she will be at the Art on the Green show in No Idaho this summer and at Mt Mama's in Stanley ID.

Off to the Foundry in Utah

(c) 2005 Ken Newman Sculptures

Ken is off to the foundry today in Utah, picking up Tale of Respect for a show in Joseph OR next weekend. Ken casts his wildlife bronze sculptures at Adonis Bronze in Alpine Utah and his figurative in CA at Frostad Ateliers, near Sacramento.

The process is extensive...see the websites below for details on the casting process... The first link provides a simple approach to understanding the bronze process and the extensive time involved.
This site is a little more complex:

Enjoy!

Scott Rogers - Sculptor

This year at the Celebration of Fine Art, Scott Rogers was in our little pod at the NW corner, which hosted this Art and Wine Pairing. It was a please to see Scott create this unique sculpture, the passion and tenacity he had while creating this piece was amazing.. Only another sculptor with a passion for getting it right (in their eyes) can appreciate the hours/months or sometime years in creating a piece...
Finding the right balance, composition an design...were right on the mark for the wine pairing by Aldo Pitton.

Art and Wine Pairing at Celebration of Fine Art

Just wanted to share a great event that was inspired by a couple Canadian artists at the Celebration of Fine Art Show. We had two art and wine pairings for clients during the show in Scottsdale.

Here is how it worked. Each artist chose three words that described their art. Then Aldo Pitton, an artist and wine consultant (remember all artists are multi-talented) viewed the work, took the words and was given the challenge of pairing a wine ($8-$12) with each of 11 artists work.

The wines were chosen, a wine pouring etiquette class given and the clients were invited. The purpose of the event was to move clients around the booth spaces by encouraging them to identify the THREE words that describe the work as well as the wine.

Aldo provided a written paragraph about the wine using synonyms of the three words (see left)... Each artist was given the task to engage the clients about their work, using descriptions that would make them, swirl, smell and taste in order for the client to appreciate how the wine paired to the art... and of course identify the three words.

The events were a success. It was truly an inventive and collaborative evening and it could not occur without the efforts of the 11 artists, their spouses and the friendships under the tent at the Celebration of Fine Art www.celebrateart.com . I will post each of the artists three words, with Aldo's written paragraph... and hope you enjoy the next several days posting.

Arrived back in Idaho

Made the 1100 mile trip from Arizona to Idaho in two days. We pulled in last night, emptied the trailer into storage today and got the trailer setup for three weeks, that's all we will be here before we head to Joseph OR for a gallery opening and then off to CA for several months for shows. See the shows on the right side for details on the shows.

Ken's studio is up and running and is already working on his curlew clay. He has a list of sculptures to complete before we leave, so he will be busy. We also just beat the storm here, it is cold and windy today an looks like we will have some snow in the morning, this weekend will be in the 70's.

We were welcomed to Idaho with a new chicken coop... chickens will be coming soon. Sandy is anxious to get her hens on Friday!

Quote of the Day

Just had to post this, my brother sent this to me after viewing Ken's Kenworth truck sculpture blog. I promise a new photo in a couple days..

Scripture quote of the day---
"Do not worry. The Lord provides. Look at the sparrows in the field. The Father provides for them by sending big-rigs in order to eat the insects off their grills!"

Happy Easter!
Love,
Ed

Searching for Marble in Arizona - Well Worn

Spent the last couple days hunting down marble for the Well Worn and Sunseekers sculptures. Found some Yule marble in a yard in Phoenix and took it to our Rock Man Pete to have it cut in slabs, weighed about 400 lbs, now it is a little more manageable (eight slabs) to get back to Idaho.

Well Worn has been very successful and we plan to have the last of the edition cast in upcoming months. Two patinas are available..

Endangered Species-Flora and Fauna in Peril

Ken currently has a sculpture "Sunseekers" at the Department of Interior Musuem in Washington DC with the Endangered Species-Flora and Fauna in Peril Exhibition. The show has been extended until May 16, so don't miss it. After the show, it will be shipped to Golden Lotus Gallery in Sedona. Based on the Masked Bobwhite endangered in So Arizona, it is a pretty interesting sculpture. A combination of mediums, bronze, limestone and copper.

Home Sweet Home-But not for long!

The Celebration of Fine Art show ended on Sunday... The last couple days we have been busy packing two trailers, moving wood and studio stuff to a friend's garage for next year. Although slower this year at the show, we are looking forward to the 20th Anniversary next year. Also looking forward to a new PC in the next month, I have been holding this one together but now is the time for replacement.

On the road to Sedona to exchange work at Golden Lotus Gallery in Sedona and visit with artist/gallery owners Honshin and Krystal. The small trailer with inventory goes North to Northern California, we have a show "Art on the Main" in Walnut Creek in mid-May. We did a gallery show in Walnut Creek about 10 years ago as well as a sculpture garden show at the Bancroft Gardens. We also will be in Marin for the Marin Art Festival in mid-June. After dropping the trailer we head back to AZ to take the 5th wheel back to Idaho. Just in time to add inventory to Galerie Belle Ame in Eagle Idaho and get ready for Art Walk-Opening Weekend at Indigo Gallery in Joseph OR on May 9. More details later on these openings.

Check out our calendar for details about upcoming shows. We should be finalizing our summer schedule by the end of next week.

Safe travels to all our artist friends heading out from AZ to homes and shows.
