I saved the best for last...or at least that's my opinion... Ken actually included his thoughts on the pairing of his wine.. So enjoy.. DebbieThe Wine – Ravenswood Sonoma County Zinfandel -Old Vine
(a heavy bodied wine)
Being fairly wine illiterate I have become fascinated with the parallels Aldo Pitton, our wine consultant for the Art and Wine Pairing, has exposed between this wine and my art. As an artist to simply describe your work in three words was an enlightening experience.
Communication – Communication – Communication… I hope this opportunity to use wine as a vehicle to better share the dialogue of my art is as intriguing to you as it has been to me.
First off this is a very American grape with origins in California and more specific to Sonoma County - very similar to my beginnings on the North Coast in Ft Bragg. The Zinfandel is produced from a very gnarled old vine with great history-similar to twisted burl woods – the great history told in a piece of wood. This wine is created simply; naturally, with a lengthy process - 24 months. I choose wood for its natural process - cracks-decay-formations in a very raw form. Slowing the process down with simple hand tools allows my mind to create a story.
The 24 months in oak barrels, develops enhanced layers of flavors and aromas - aerating the wine – moving the wine over your tongue allows one to identify these intricate layers. In the same manner, when allowing one’s eye to move all around the sculpture opens the mind’s eye to see subtle textures, layers of materials and the story.
There is a struggle between the tannins and fruit to find harmony. The struggle to portray movement in solid objects – communicating emotion not just beauty - is what allows this to happen.
Enjoy the Structure, Tension and Complexity of my sculptures and Ravenswood Sonoma County Zinfandel!
