Golden Lotus Gallery - Sedona Arizona

Nicholas and Krystal were first friends, then gallery owners. They hail from the Seattle area where they were involved in a family gallery and we met them as neighbors (100 artists under the same tent) doing the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale Arizona. After enjoying the warm Arizona weather for several years in the winter, they chose to move from the Pacific Northwest to Sedona and opened The Golden Lotus Gallery on the main 89A Hwy through Downtown Sedona.
They renovated the space and popped a classy glass door onto main street and two years later they have definitely made a presence in the Sedona gallery scene. Nicholas Kirsten-Honshin (a painter, sculptor, jeweler, poet, intellect) is an incredible individual/artist and when we first met we could never have imaged the connection we made with Honshin and his lovely wife Krystal.
Ken only has a couple sculptures at the gallery at this time, but there is a special sculpture there now, Sunseekers, an interpretive sculpture created for the Endangered Species - Flora and Fauna in Peril, which exhibited in 2008-2009 at the Wilding Art Museum in Los Olivos CA and at the Department of Interior Museum in Washington DC.
Sunseekers - Artist Statement by Ken Newman (c) 2009
I make no claim to be a birder, biologist or naturalist. I'm an artist and along this journey I stumbled upon the very beautiful masked bobwhite.
I am always intrigued by the relationships of man and nature, so as happenstance would have it, I now know a little something about the bird and the plight of its habitat, but only enough to be dangerous. Drought, erosion, loss of habitat through loss and introductions of grasses are only some of the impacts on the species.
Mixing mediums in my sculptures provides depth and dimension not easily captured in bronze alone. Stone, hand forged copper and bronze are incorporated to create this sculpture.
Honshin's work has an Asian nature theme, check out the gallery website at http://www.golden-lotus-gallery.com/ and take the virtual gallery walk. Next time you are in Sedona, don't miss the gallery, located in Uptown Sedona.
Spiritual Calling - Vincent Van Gogh
Thanks for sharing, Susan.
“Your profession is not what brings home your weekly paycheck. Your profession is what you are put on this earth to do –with such passion and such intensity, it becomes spiritual in calling.” Vincent Van Gogh

Indigo Gallery in Joseph OR

Catherine and Stewart at Indigo Gallery on Main Street in Joseph, Oregon first saw Ken's work at the Wallowa Art Festival several years ago. Last year, we met with them at the show and talked about possible gallery representation. Early this May we spent several days at the Gallery Spring Opening. The gallery is at the foot of the Wallowa's, a beautiful setting.
Joseph is a bronze town, there are several foundries in the immediate area and the streets are lined with monumental sculptures. The gallery features a variety of artists including Stewart Jones' jewelery studio. His work has won several design awards, including the most prestigious award in the jewelry industry, the DeBeers Diamonds International Design Award. Check out the website for details on Stewart's amazing work.
Yesterday, I drove over to Joseph, a 2-1/2 hour trip from Cambridge, Idaho - over the mountain, which is only open in the summer. The trip generally takes over 4-1/2 hours one way using the interstate. Ken was busy completing a clay to take to the foundry later this week and I needed to swap out a couple sculptures for upcoming shows and drop off a couple smaller sculptures for the gallery's busy summer season.
The drive takes you through Hells Canyon, the Brownlee and Oxbow Dams and over a small paved road that takes off a little before reaching Halfway OR. The 62 miles of steep terrain and beautiful scenery takes you up a narrow pass and drops you into the town of Joseph. During the drive I saw 10 vehicles (2 RVs 3 motorcycles and 5 cars) and only ran over one squirrel ( I really did try to miss it).
Joseph Oregon is beautiful, but remote...check it out next time you are looking for a get-away and stop by the gallery and say hi to Stewart and Catherine. http://www.josephoregon.com/Sunday, July 19, 2009

Italian Street Painting at the Tahoe Arts Festival
How do you spend a weekend in Lake Tahoe, we choose to participate in the Tahoe Arts Festival -Italian Street Painting at the Biltmore in Crystal Bay. It's a weekend of art, music and time with family. Enjoy the street paintings... and the process. This is our son's third year competing in this event. Each year their space gets bigger, this year it was an 8x8 and they shot an image of a sea gull from Crissy Field overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge in the fog!
Enjoy some other street painting festival videos!

Observing Grace - Curlew

Chosen for Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum Exhibition in Wausau WI. http://www.lywam.org/
We were first introduced by a friend over 30 years ago. It was first light in a rice field when only silhouettes are visible. Only a fleeting glance, but it left a lasting impression. Over time our paths crossed on many occasions, but shyness prevailed and that fleeting impression was all that remained.
Over the years, my curiosity grew, was it real? I raised my boys to men, my heart was free and so was my schedule. It was time to pursue that lasting impression to see if it was real. Would shyness prevail? ”What the Hell”, I gave it a whirl, off to the pasture with binoculars in hand, I had to understand. Hours of observation and research, no camera - just the mind’s eye and thumbnail sketches revealed the trueness of that initial impression. It was Real “long legs, slender body, large wing span, long decurved bill, a sculptural goddess, the epitome of grace, the Curlew.

Tools to Carve Walnut.

While we are on the road, this trip with our 13 ft utility trailer, tools and supplies are limited. Here are the tools Ken is working with on the walnut sculpture. That mallet is over 35 years old and yes there is glue there, remember this sculpture is a complete lamination...and the process is driving him crazy..
After almost two months on the No Coast of California, its time to move on...the state is issuing IOUs as of today. We head for Tahoe/Truckee on Monday. Ken has a gallery show at Vista Gallery in Tahoe Vista, which begins on Tuesday 7th 10-5:30 through Friday and then there is a Saturday reception with three artists, for details check out the gallery website at www.vistagallery.com . Ken will be demonstrating outdoors M-F and at the gallery to answer questions, gab and look good on Saturday from 1-4pm.
I haven't forgot about posting more images of the sculpture Ken is working on, its moving slow. We spent the day in Leggett CA with Emma on the Eel River. She loves the water and Ken loves diving off the rocks.
