The Toad progress at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale AZ

Progress is continuing on the toad sculpture at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale AZ. It is getting a lot of attention and Ken is consumed with only thoughts of it until it is completed. He was almost growling at people today at the show. Hopefully, in a week. Nothing is quick when it comes to a wood carver.

The Evolution of a Bronze Sculpture

Like parts of a puzzle, as work progresses on a sculpture they evolve, and since Ken’s work it not captured with a photograph, but from an emotional response to an experience it constantly changes as he captures his mind’s eye and creates a sculptural piece of art.

*Ken reflects on an experience, investigates his observations while viewing the bird/animal in the wild, sometimes with his naked eye, other times with binoculars. He then goes to his sketchbook and does a thumbnail sketch, usually only one or two.

*Reference material is researched to understand the anatomy, their habitat, and other characteristics of the subject. Sometimes he is even fortunate enough to have access to a specimen.

* Back to the field for more observations base on his research. No photos just imprinting the actual bird in his mind. Only then does he start a sculpture in clay.

*An armature is created and then Ken spends anywhere from a month to a year moving the clay, changing the posture until the sculpture captures the essence of the bird in his minds eye.

Observing Grace, the curlew is a perfect example of how some sculptures evolve. In observing the graceful image of their accent and landing Ken uses his artistic license to create an interpretive sculpture, full of movement and grace. Patinas are developed at the foundry to compliment the movement in the sculpture.

Work in Progess at Celebration of Fine Art

Wood sculpture in progress. Doesn't seem like a lot of wood is removed, but I cleaned up a small trash can this morning. Today Ken is working on the copper leaves for the toad wood sculpture base and we will post images tonight on the progress of that sculpture.

New Wood Sculpture Starts at Celebration of Fine Art

This wood was found discarded in the desert over 5 years ago, aged for many years it is as hard as stone. The wood has been identified by a long time wood turner and resident of the valley as Caraba or Brazilian Mahogany, grown by the pioneers in the desert climate as shade canopies. The unique grain patter is called fiddleback and will make an interesting sculpture.

Watch it progress at the Celebration of Fine Art http://www.celebrateart.com/ in Scottsdale AZ. Over 100 working artists, the Big White Tents at the corner of Scottsdale Rd and Mayo Blvd, off exit 34 of the 101 Loop.

Toad in Progress at The Celebration of Fine Art

While traveling the Blue Ridge Mountains in October and November, Ken started a small sculpture. It is an oak burl and the sculpture will include a combination of rocks for the base. Ken is finishing the sculpture with tung oil. The process takes many coats, with sanding and steel wool in between coats. Watch for updates here next week or visit us at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale AZ, now through March 28, 2010.

Trailer making its way south to Celebration of Fine Art

First we drive the 37ft 5th wheel trailer south to Arizona and then Ken heads back to pick up the 13ft trailer that carries sculptures, pedestals, tools, etc.  We had hoped to find someone coming down for the Boise State Football game, but the weather was always changing.  We found someone to drive it to Jackpot NV and Ken headed up there yesterday. Talked to him last night and he made it there about 3pm and was starting back to beat a storm and low temps headed to Ely NV. Should be in sometime today.  Then off to Sedona on Friday to drop off new work at Golden Lotus Gallery.

Busy today running labels for our group mailing for the Celebration of Fine Art.  Check out information on the upcoming show at http://www.celebrateart.com/ or at http://www.nwsalon.com/  (this website features a group of artists in the NW corner of the Celebration of Fine Art, new works will be posted with updates on the show as the opening nears on January 16th.)

6 days to setup - The Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale AZ

On January 11, over 100 artists converge at the 101 Loop and Scottsdale Blvd at the Big White Tents to begin the 4-1/2 day process of creating their booths and filling them with art.  Not your typical weekend tent show, this show runs 70 days and is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a special Invitation Only Opening this year on Friday January 15th. The show opens to the public on Saturday, January 16 and runs daily through Sunday March 28.

Many artists typically work in seclusion when creating their work, this show puts working professional artists on stage, as collectors and visitors mingle among the artists finding and buying works of art.

If you are heading to Scottsdale this winter, this is one of those MUST DO things in the City of the Sun.  check out the website at http://www.celebrateart.com/  If you contact us through DM onTwitter at  @newmansculpture we will have tickets at the door for you.

Watch for future posts on the setup, we will have images each day leading up to the opening  of the Celebration of Fine Art on January 16.

Arrived in Arizona for The Celebration of Fine Art

Long trip, only one issue in 1250 miles, lost a trailer tire on the RV outside Jerome ID, a very nice person in a white pickup waved us over. Apparently we had a tire blow, must have been slow because we never felt a thing. It happened just before dark.

Ken with A1 Towing of Twin Falls came out (we are Good Sam members), he changed the tire on the freeway side at dark and then followed us to make sure the pressure was right, then directed us to Les Schwab in Jerome ID, where we spent the night in the parking lot.

At 8:30, the tire was replaced (50% credit) and off again heading south. Roads were clear until we hit Ely Nevada. They had several inches fall overnight. Made it to Searchlight NV for New Year's Eve dinner at the Nugget and spent the night at the Truck stop.  The only thing Searchlight is known for is the hometown of Harry Reid.

Arrived safe and sound at Desert Edge RV Park in Phoenix AZ. Tom and Tammy Lucas had a great steak dinner for us when we arrived.  Spent the next two days cleaning the trailer, bathing the dog and recouping in the Arizona sun.
